Unfamiliarity. It has been a theme for the 1-0-1 Green Bay Packers in this early stretch of the 2018 season. It was that way with new-look offensive schemes with Chicago and Minnesota in weeks one and two.
The Packers will face that again in droves as they kick off in the nation's capital today against 1-1 Washington. These teams haven't played in a meaningful game since the 2015 NFC Wild Card round - a Packers win that year.
Green Bay last went up against quarterback Alex Smith, an off-season pickup for Washington, back in 2015. The last time defensive coordinator Mike Pettine went up against Smith was also in 2015.
But the biggest challenge for the Packers will be what Washington will throw at them defensively - a so-far stalwart unit.
Yes, two games is a small sample size, but consider what Washington has done so far:
- 1st in fewest yards allowed
- 1st in fewest passing yards allowed
- 2nd in points allowed
- 3rd in fewest yards allowed per play
- 6th in turnovers forced
Yet Green Bay comes into the game as a slight favorite during a time of the season where we truly know little about how good teams really are.
These are the games where you can potentially steal wins while trying to define yourself and your place in the NFL pecking order. Green Bay has perhaps much to prove after barely escaping Chicago with a win and surviving with a tie against Minnesota, a team many consider an NFC favorite.
Are the Packers for real or a second-tier NFC team?
Today will help define the early answers to those questions. Or, perhaps it might not, but Green Bay can grab a win anyway.
