MILWAUKEE -- A Brewers win on Friday would mark twelve in a row and free burgers for all at George Webb restaurants.
It's George Webb's most well-known tradition -- a prediction that the Brewers will win 12 games in a row. Surprisingly, it's only happened once in April of 1987.
"It's sort of a once in a lifetime thing, but I guess it's going to happen twice," said George Webb franchise owner Tom Aldridge.
Aldridge remembers the day as a combination of chaos and fun. He said the 45 George Webb locations at the time cooked a combined 170,000 burgers.
"It was a rainy day and yet there were lines outside every single restaurant down the block and people filing in all day long to get their free burger," Aldridge said.
What employee Pam Bloom remembers most was the smell.
"They brought us five bags of Bermuda onions and for five days I worked third shift, I chopped onions to put in the buckets," she said.
Flash forward 31 years to present day and the Brewers are once again knocking on the door of 12 straight. The stakes couldn't be any higher as they fight for their first World Series berth since 1982.
"People have asked me about it every since then, 'Did you lose money?' You lose a little money but the notoriety and people coming in and the excitement about it made it all worth it," said Aldridge.
If the Brewers claim their coveted twelfth win on Friday, George Webb plans to announce soon after as to which day they will serve free burgers.
