It's not often that one Wisconsin girl wins a major tennis tournament. But two, from the same club?
"There's only a handful of girls from Wisconsin, so to win the 12's and the 14's is pretty special for these two girls," Western Racquet Club Director of Junior Development Eric Martinez said.
Twelve year old Bella Marquart of Pewaukee and 11 year old Ashley Matz of Brookfield, both train at Western Racquet Club in Elm Grove and both won Midwest Indoor Championships. They've progressed, proving just because you're from the Badger state, doesn't mean you can't hit the yellow tennis ball.
"Sometimes I think I'm not hitting the ball that hard," Ashley Matz says.
"I like going into a tournament sometimes being the underdog," Bella Marquart says. "And then coming out, and people are like whoa, this Wisconsin girl?"
"I think they probably have a little chip on their shoulder being from Wisconsin," Martinez admits.
