MILWAUKEE — Beans and Barley has been serving the Milwaukee community for 47 years strong. Polly Kaplan and Jim Neumeyer own it, and Jim has quite the story.

"When I started here, I was 19 years old, and I was a dishwasher," he says. "I was going to UWM. There were a couple of people that I worked with, and when I saw them cook, I was like, wow."

This popular restaurant on the East Side has a considerable following. It's popular with professional athletes and people that want healthy food for the right price.

"I think the answer to why so many athletes in town eat here is it's clean, no frills," says manager Corbin Coonan. "The recipes that we have here are straight-forward."
