One of the suspects accused of multiple armed robberies is in custody after two others died after a car drove into the Kinnickinnic River on New Year’s Eve.

During a news conference Wednesday, MPD Captain William Beauchene of the Robbery Division said that suspect is in custody, and charges are expected in the coming days.

Police declined to release the name of the suspect Wednesday during the news conference.

In one of the reported armed robberies, a citizen fought back with a machete. The suspects then reportedly fired shots at that citizen.

Shannon Nehmer, 19, and her 2-year-old daughter Annamelia Hernandez died in the crash. Police said Wednesday 29-year-old Charles Barefield also died in the crash.

Police said Nehmer and Barefield were the other two suspects in the armed robbery.

Police also released surveillance footage of the car during Wednesday's new conference.

On New Year’s Eve, police identified the car as the vehicle involved in the armed robberies and gave chase.

The car sped away and officers lost the car near 1st and Greenfield before the car crashed through a fence near Greenfield Avenue and Barclay Street into the river.

“We want to take this opportunity to remind the public that anytime they flee the police, they are risking their lives and they are risking the lives of other motorists. It is a felony to flee the police and people have been going to prison,” said Milwaukee Police Department Assistant Chief Steve Caballero.
