WEST ALLIS - An overnight shooting involving an armed robbery suspect and West Allis and New Berlin Police leaves one man dead.
According to police it happened Saturday, May 13. Initially, the West Allis Police Department was called to respond to a business in the 7200 block of W. Greenfield Avenue for a report of an armed robbery. The robbery suspect took off in a white vehicle. An officer then spotted the vehicle and tried to perform a traffic stop. The passenger exited the car, fired a shot at the officer, and took off running. The driver of the vehicle drove away.
“I just saw a whole bunch of officers over there and stuff," Jamel Lyons said. “It’s been a lot of [robberies] over here and stuff, but not this. I never saw this before."
Lyons is referring to the aftermath of the shooting involving West Allis and New Berlin PD. The area near S. 60th Street and Beloit, where the incident occurred was tapped off for blocks Saturday.
“I started hearing a lot of police sirens from every direction so I knew something was going on," Dana Cruz said.
Dana Cruz lives on N. 60th Street just blocks away from where the pursuit of the suspect ended. Police said they found the man hiding in a dumpster. During an encounter with the suspect, officers from both West Allis and New Berlin fired shots. The man died at the scene.
“I’ve lived in West Allis my whole life," Cruz said. "I don’t think I’ve ever had a police shooting or anyone shooting at police that I know of and especially not this close to home."
Deputy Chief Robert Fletcher of the West Allis Police Department confirms no officers were injured. The Milwaukee County Investigative Team (MCI Team) is investigation the incident. The City of West Allis and New Berlin Police Departments are not involved in the investigation of the shooting.
