SUAMICO, Wis. -- The clock is ticking for hunters to bag a buck this gun season.
That means the state can expect plenty of activity in the woods this weekend before the season comes to an end Sunday night.
Officials at the DNR say the closing weekend is normally a busy time for hunters.
They hope that's the case again this year because hunting numbers for opening weekend dropped compared to a year ago.
The deer herd is actually high after a few mild winters, but partly due to weather issues, the numbers have still dropped.
However, that means there are a lot of opportunities still in the woods for hunters.
"We have a lot of places in the state where we have an abundance of deer and abundance of tags and we hope people take advantage of that," the DNR's John Huff said.
Another factor that could contribute to lower numbers is that less people are registering for licenses.
The DNR also hopes to see that trend reverse and see younger hunters start entering the woods.
