Crews responded to a house fire in Caledonia near Highway 38 and Four Mile Road just before 10:30 .m. on Thursday.
Officials say a family was home at the time of the fire and everyone made it out safely.
"You could hear glass breaking, I mean it was a very powerful fire," said Steve Kohl who lives nearby. He said he saw the flames shooting upwards of 30 to 40 feet into the area.
Authorities at the scene told TMJ4 News that the nearest fire hydrant was estimated to be about a mile away. Crews used tanker trucks to bring water closer to the blaze. Those crews were also battling frigid temperatures on Thursday.
"I think if they had not been in time, there could have been a much, much larger problem," said Kohl who watched from his backyard as the fire spread. "What was really striking about it was how quickly the fire moved. In just over an hour the house was nearly completely destroyed and there were brush fires in the area as well so with the wind it appeared to be a pretty dangerous situation."
Investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire.
In the meantime, neighbors hope to be able to help those who were displaced.
"I've seen again and again the community generally comes together and helps families like this in need and we certainly will be part of that and provide any help that we can," said Kohl.
Authorities say in addition to the evacuees being safe, first responders who braved the elements were also uninjured.
