APPLETON, Wis. -- Packers linebacker Clay Matthews left the field after taking a hit to the face during the Green and Gold Charity Softball event on Saturday.

It happened at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium.

Matthews was rushed to the emergency room for what was believed to be a broken nose. A few hours later, Matthew confirmed on Twitter that he will have surgery on his nose once the swelling goes down.

Matthews was pitching to guard Lucas Patrick, who hit a line drive back to the mound into Matthews' face. Matthews fell to the ground upon impact then immediately covered his face and walked off the field, disappearing into the clubhouse.

Play was temporarily suspended before a netting was placed ahead of the mound for protection of the pitchers.

Matthews is a co-captain along with wide receiver Davante Adams in this year's Green and Gold Charity Softball game. The two take over for Jordy Nelson, who headed the event in years past.
