HARRIS COUNTY, Texas – A 10-year-old boy in Texas is recovering after “accidentally” being shot by a family member, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office says.

The shooting happened Tuesday evening in a community north of Houston.

KTRK reports that the boy was being babysat by his aunt, 19-year-old Caitlyn Smith, who fired a pistol while taking selfies with it. She reportedly thought the gun was unloaded.

When the gun went off, the bullet reportedly struck the boy. He was then transported by ambulance to an area hospital, where he underwent surgery.

Sheriff Ed Gonzalez announced Wednesday that the boy was listed in serious condition, but he is expected to make a full recovery.

Meanwhile, Gonzalez said Smith has been arrested and charged with injury to a child – serious bodily injury, a second-degree felony.
