Three major universities are saying goodbye to physical student IDs in exchange for a more convenient digital version.
Alabama, Duke, and Oklahoma are taking advantage of Apple's newly announced feature that allows students to access their college ID to enter specific buildings or pay for lunch.
According to a report from CNBC, the ID is accessed in the Wallet app on an iPhone or Apple Watch.
Since access to Apple Wallet requires verification using Face ID, a passcode or Touch ID, a student's college identification card is less prone to loss or theft. Also, unlike a physical card, the digital student ID can show information such as the remaining balance on a meal plan, CNBC said.
More universities are expected to adopt this feature later this year.
