(NBC) - A shelter dog that was rescued just two days before he was scheduled to be euthanized could not keep his paws off the man who saved him.

Gregory, a 2-year-old stray beagle, is heartworm positive, which is why the shelter put him on the euthanasia list.

An area family named the Kirks have a local hound rescue and regularly check shelters for condemned animals.

When Schenley Hutson Kirk spotted Gregory, he knew she had to save him.

She says Gregory is very loving, well behaved and loves to give kisses.

The couple already has an offer to adopt Gregory.

The pup is on heartworm medication, and they hope a vet will clear him to meet his new family in a couple of months.

Kirk's Facebook post on May 1 has been shared more than 10,000 times.
