WAUWATOSA -- A man has died in an early morning rollover crash on Interstate 41, the Medical Examiner says.

The crash happened around 4 a.m. Monday.

Witnesses told the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office that the man's vehicle drifted into the distress lane, struck the median wall several times, drove on top of the wall and then rolled over onto its roof.

Milwaukee County Sheriff's deputies found the driver bleeding profusely from his head and cut him out of the seatbelt in order to render aid.

The driver was transported to the hospital, where medical staff indicated the man suffered a gunshot wound to the temple. He was pronounced dead at 5:50 a.m.

Sheriffs' deputies found a pistol inside his car.

The crash forced law enforcement to close all southbound lanes of Interstate 41 at Good Hope Road in Milwaukee County for more than three hours. The freeway reopened around 7:30 a.m. Monday.

No other information has been released at this time.
