MAYVILLE, Wis. — Mayville police say a 72-year-old man shot three people outside a senior living apartment complex before he turned the gun on himself. Everyone is expected to survive the shooting. Investigators say it all started from an argument.
“I’m shocked. I guess nervous. You don’t expect this to happen in Mayville,” said Crystal Bartelt who manages a group home across the street from the scene.
“It doesn’t seem to make a difference anymore, you can be anywhere and things can go crazy,” said Pam Buettner.
The Wisconsin Division of Criminal Investigations and Mayville Police say around 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, a 72-year-old man came up to three people standing outside the Spring Glen Apartments on Horicon and Clark Streets.
The group got into an argument and investigators say the 72-year-old pulled out and gun and started shooting. Investigators say the man shot a 53-year-old woman, a 64-year-old woman and a 67-year-old man. Then he shot himself.
“I tried to come out this door right here and her aunt was laying right here on the sidewalk on her side like this and they were working on her,” said Diane Diels who lives in the building.
“I have anxiety. I have mental health issues and she just told me she saw my aunt laying on the ground,” said Charina Barrientes, who also lives in the building.
Barrientes says her aunt was taken to Froedtert Hospital and is now in a coma. Investigators say everyone is expected to survive.
“It’s still a tragedy in itself because it shouldn’t have happened. They were innocent people that got injured,” said a man who lives in the building who did not want to give his name.
Investigators have not released the names of the victims or the shooter.
