MILWAUKEE — The YMCA of Metropolitan Milwaukee is permanently closing its downtown branch in the Plankinton Arcade building, the Milwaukee Business Journal reported on Wednesday.

According to the BizJournal, the YMCA is currently negotiating for a space in the Avenue, an adjacent building. The organization is transitioning to smaller "boutique" locations.

President and CEO Carrie Wall told the Milwaukee Business Journal that the YMCA "will no longer be the big box YMCA."

Currently, the Rite-Hite branch in Brown Deer is the area's only full-fledged fitness facility.

The downtown branch closed in March due to the pandemic and reopened in June. It closed again in August, citing a concentration of COVID-19 cases in Milwaukee.
