The Wisconsin Department of Transportation plans to debut new license plates this April.

The DOT says because the supply of regular Wisconsin plates with six characters will run out at the central office, they're planning to debut seven character license plates.

Local DMV's and third party vendors will continue to issue the 6-character plates until they run out.

In a statement, Jeremy Krueger, supervisor or the license Plate Issuance Unit says, “There’s been a lot of interest as we near the end of the alphabet and the license plate series. All of the number combinations have been used, and we needed to find a large range of plate numbers to use into the future.”

The current license plate design reversed from letters to numbers in 2000.

The new format will return three letters beginning with AAA- then followed by four numbers (AAA- 1001).

The plate artwork will stay the same.
