UPDATE: Ashwaubenon Public Safety in Brown County now say a letter and check some residents had received from Walmart is actually legitimate.
Police issued an alert Wednesday warning residents about the letter and refund check, claiming it was a scam designed to steal funds.
Authorities said Thursday morning that they were informed by Walmart that the checks are valid and that recipients should cash them as normal.
Police believe the letters were a scheme designed to obtain the recipient bank account and routing numbers.
