WAUKESHA — Lightning caused the fire overnight at the Hillcrest Park Apartments, according to Waukesha fire officials.

More than 42 units had to be evacuated and more than 100 people were displaced, according to officials.

The Red Cross opened a shelter for apartment residents at Elmbrook Church, 777 S. Barker Road, in Brookfield. The shelter is in the gym; enter through the south side of the church.

At about 11:30 p.m. Thursday, the City of Waukesha Police and Fire Dispatch Center started to receive calls of a structure fire on East Main Street.

The dispatch center then received a call from a neighboring building at the apartment complex with reports of fire alarms going off at Shepherd Court.

Crews at Shepherd Court found smoke and fire in the building’s attic.

This is a developing story. Check back throughout the day for updates.
