Update: Water is back on and the scene is clear.

WAUKESHA, Wis. — The Waukesha Police Department is asking the public to avoid the area of S. West Ave. between Hoover and Progress due to a water main break.

Around 11:30 a.m. Monday, Waukesha police said the break was being repaired. The process was expected to take a few hours.

Repair crews on site expect water to be restored to the area by 6 p.m. and confirmed that one million gallons of water spilled from the broken pipe at a rate of 8,300 gallons per minute.

Pete Skebba with the Waukesha Water Utility said it's likely that Mother Nature is to blame.

"When it does warm up and the frost starts moving, that's when you get more problems," he explained.

Crews shut off water to isolate the area, find the problem, and fix it. That impacted several businesses in the area of S West Avenue — like Jet's Pizza, which had to close for the day.
