Two people have died in a crash on I-41, marking the seventh and eight traffic fatalities in Washington County this year.

The Washington County Sheriff's Department responded to a crash on I-41 northbound between Hwy 60 and Hwy 144 in the Town of Polk around 10 p.m. Tuesday night.

Once on the scene, deputies observed two passengers lying on I-41, one was in traffic and the other was in the ditch.

Deputies performed life-saving measures immediately and Flight for Life was requested for both individuals, but unfortunately one of the individuals was pronounced dead on the scene. The other individual was flown to Froedtert Medical Center where they were later pronounced dead.

It appears that both occupants were ejected from the vehicle after crossing both lanes of traffic into the median and crashing into a guard rail, according to the Washington County Sheriff's Office.

Neither passenger was wearing a seat belt.

Interstate 41 northbound lanes were closed for approximately four hours in relation to the crash.

The identities of the individuals will be released at a later time.
