Vice President Mike Pence said the killing of George Floyd on the streets of Minneapolis "shocked the conscience of our nation and it was a tragedy."
He said that the White House has been meeting this week with law enforcement and African American leaders to talk about changes to policing and police use of force.
"There is an opportunity for us to give law enforcement in this country more tools and maybe additional guidance with regards to the use of force that will contribute to public safety," Pence said.
However, the Vice President stressed "we are not going to defund the police."
NBC News reports that President Trump is said to be finalizing an executive order that encourages police departments to meet current professional standards for the use of force. Including recommendations that will encourage "tactics for de-escalation."
