RIVER HILLS-- The River Hills Police Department is asking drivers to pay attention after two of their squad cars were struck within the last month, according to a Facebook post from the department.

The first incident occurred while an officer in an unmarked Tahoe was monitoring traffic, and a driver of another vehicle fell asleep at the wheel. The squad was parked out of traffic when the offending vehicle crashed into it, causing severe damage to the squad.

The second incident happened within the last few days when a marked squad was on a traffic stop, and a driver tried to squeeze between oncoming traffic. The officer was about to get out of his squad when his side mirror and door were struck. According to the Facebook post, the officer would have also been hit if it had been only a second later.

RHPD is urging drivers to pay attention, arrange for a ride if you're tired, and yield emergency vehicles when their lights are activated.
