Two world-known North Woods events are joining forces. The Lumberjack World Championship is combining with the American Birkebeiner cross-country ski race.
These two recognizable North Woods events are joining together after an agreement between the American Birkebeiner Ski Foundation (ABSF) and the Lumberjack World Championships Foundation, Inc. (LWCF). Both organizations are located in Hayward, Wisconsin. The two events signed an agreement to share resources and management services.
Tony Wise founded the Lumberjack Championships over 50 years ago. Shortly after that, Wise also founded the cross-country ski race. ABSF's Birkie week brings in about 40,000 skiers to northwest Wisconsin in February. This year, Birkie week festivities will take place from Feb. 22-25, 2018. In July, the Lumberjack World Championships brings in about 12,000 spectators and consists of over 21 events. The dates for the Lumberjack Championship this year are July 19-21, 2018.
