Milwaukee, WI - ID requirements are changing for domestic travel, and those changes are going into effect in October of next year.
Starting Oct. 1, 2020, every air traveler 18 or older will need a REAL ID compliant driver license or another acceptable form of ID to fly within the states.
“From our perspective here at TSA, REAL ID adds another important layer of security,” Mark Lendvay, TSA Wisconsin Federal Security Director, said.
According to Lendvay, with the REAL ID in effect terrorists will be less likely to get away with using a fake ID at airports.
“Those that do not have a real ID or enhanced driver’s license without a star will not be permitted to board a commercial flight starting October 1st of 2020,” Lendvay said.
REAL IDs are typically marked with a star. To confirm a Wisconsin driver license is a REAL ID, look for the cutout of a star in the upper right-hand corner of the card.
“Wisconsin residents can continue to choose to have a non-compliant card, but they will need another form of identification like a passport to board a plane on access federal sites,” Kristina Boardman, an administrator with the Division of Motor Vehicles said.
Wisconsin has been issuing REAL ID driver licenses and ID cards since January 2013 after the REAL ID Act was passed by Congress in 2005.
