VILLAGE OF RAYMOND — The voters have spoken. This week, a Racine County community now has a new name.
The rural town of Raymond is now the village of Raymond. Elizabeth Hansen, who has lived in the area for 41 years, said the new name brings greater influence.
"As a village, we're going to have more control over how we develop in the future and what goes on around us," Hansen said.
As a village, Raymond can better protect its borders and decision-making authority, preventing annex by another municipality.
"Who we are and how we want our community to be really doesn't change, but we want control over what happens with our community," Hansen said.
"It's an exciting time, isn't it? Raymond has been here for so long for so many years, and I think we are all ready to be a village," said the Rev. Manda Stack of the Community Church, United Church of Christ.

Special law related to Foxconn allows towns adjacent to the campus the opportunity to incorporate into a village easily without meeting the state's standard requirements.
"I think we can all stand a little taller and feel more proud of who we are and who we've been through the years in history," Stack said.
