Tomah School Board bans Confederate flag

TOMAH -- Confederate flags and monuments have been under scrutiny for the last few years due to the shooting of nine black church members in South Carolina in 2015 and the deadly white nationalist rally in Charlottesville.

According to our partners at WISC-TV, the Tomah School Board voted unanimously to ban the Confederate flag, joining seven other schools in the Mississippi Valley Conference to do so.

Wisconsin Public Radio reports Tomah School Superintendent Cindy Zahrte says the matter was brought before the school board after several incidents at the high school, including someone letting the air out of a student's tires in connection with the flag.

As a response, a community member and student spoke out against the ban during the board meeting and said it would limit students' rights to free speech.
