A sizable mayfly hatch in La Crosse was so big that it was picked up on weather radar around the Mississippi River.
The National Weather Service took to their Facebook page, posting a video of the radar image overtaken by the mayfly hatch, thinking that it might be incoming weather.
Gravitating towards anything near a body of water, the delicately winged insects are known to be fixed to light poles, light bulbs, and headlights, according to the Department of Natural Resources.
Mayflies are known as an annual nuisance to many Wisconsinites, especially in areas like La Crosse. One large swarm appeared near Lake Michigan last year.
In some areas of Europe, the mayfly hatches are so large that they have come tourist attractions.
