MILWAUKEE — A 26-year-old Milwaukee man is in custody for the fatal shooting of a Milwaukee police officer on the city's south side.
Milwaukee Police Department says tactical unit officers were executing a search warrant in the 2900 block of S.12 Street just after 9:15 a.m. Officers came in contact with two suspects when the 35-year-old officer was shot.
The officer, a 17 year veteran, was transported to Froedtert Hospital where he passed away.
"I am filled with sorrow for this needless loss and at the same time filled with anger at the individual who took the life of a brave officer," said Mayor Tom Barrett. "He was doing his job -- working to make this city safer, and he died."
Officials have not yet released the name of the fallen officer out of respect for the victim's family.
This marks the third MPD officer that has been killed in the line of duty in the last eight months.
