Get ready to pay a premium for parking in some parts of Milwaukee.

The common council approved “surge pricing”  in some parts of the city and it will raise rates all over by a vote of 9-5.

The top hourly meter rate of 50 cents will go up to $2 per hour. It would also expand meter hours to 9 p.m. and add Saturdays.

The “surge pricing” will apply to spots near special events.  For example, rates could be raised around Fiserv Forum during a basketball game or in the Third Ward on busy days.

Mayor Tom Barrett is expected to sign the measure. Estimates say the changes would add $1.9 million to the city’s parking budget.
