The South Milwaukee mayor and common council honored nine citizens Tuesday who helped save a man's life months earlier.
On Oct. 25 Dean Evers was playing volleyball at the South Milwaukee Middle School when he collapsed to the ground.
Multiple bystanders rushed to his side to call 911, begin CPR and ultimately utilize the Automatic External Defibrilator (AED) after learning he was suffering from sudden cardiac arrest.
South Milwaukee Fire Chief Joseph Knitter said that without the help of the individuals, Evers' story could have ended very differently.
"By the time our paramedics accessed the gentleman he was talking in full sentences," said Chief Knitter. "It's heartwarming because we don't get to experience that too often."
But it's probably safe to say that the person who remains the most grateful through it all is Evers.
"It could have happened anywhere but it happened where people were willing to get involved, people who knew CPR, knew how to use the AED," said Evers. "I thank the lord and I thank them for my life being able to be continued."
