MILWAUKEE -- Some AT&T customers are without phone and internet service Wednesday morning after a contractor working on the Milwaukee Streetcar accidentally cut some utility lines, TODAY'S TMJ4 has learned.
The lines were cut near N. Broadway and E. Wells St. Some businesses and homes reported losing phone or internet service, or both.
AT&T issued the following statement to TODAY'S TMJ4 on the incident:
“Some of our facilities were damaged by a crew doing construction in the Milwaukee area. Services are starting to restore now and we will continue to work until all customers are restored. We apologize for the inconvenience.”
There's no word yet on when service is expected to be restored to all customers.
"As with any public works project, the contractors we hire perform due diligence in identifying locations of utilities within the construction zone," a statement from the city's Department of Public Works says. "Unfortunately, despite the best precautions, an underground telecommunication utility was accidentally damaged. The contractor is coordinating with the utility to get the line repaired as quickly as possible."
