MILWAUKEE — A mother was shot and killed while driving with her two kids in the car on Thursday, according to the Milwaukee Police Department.

Investigators say that a 23-year-old female was driving northbound on 5th Street when drove through a gun fight of subjects "shooting across the street at each-other," police said.

The medical examiner was called to the scene about 7:00 p.m. Thursday.

The victim’s family told TODAY’S TMJ4 that the woman was on her way to visit her sister nearby when she was struck in the head by a stray bullet.

The victim’s family claims a fight between men in the area escalated to gunfire with a stray bullet striking the mother behind the wheel. A family member said the victim’s infant and 3-year-old kids were in the car, but they were not hurt in the shooting.

"I just wanted to cry," said Bethsheba Frazier, who lives near 5th and Center. "I don't even know the lady, not my family member, but it's just a life, an innocent life that ain't got nothing to do with a robbery or a fight or whatever."

A TODAY’S TMJ4 news crew spotted more than a dozen evidence markers along 5th street. Many of them show where police found spent bullet shells.

The victim’s name has not been officially released.
