The primary election for Milwaukee County Sheriff is a week away and Sheriff Richard Schmidt is responding to criticism over a religious podcast he recorded last year.
In a news release, activist group Voces De La Frontera cited the podcast posted on Oct. 6, 2017. The group said, “while Schmidt was Sheriff, Schmidt and the minister, Greg Huffman, say that women who are victims of domestic violence should submit to their spouse.”
The recording, posted on sermonaudio.com, has been deleted. But TODAY’S TMJ4 asked Schmidt to address the critics.
“I was quite outraged by that statement, very outraged, I would never, ever recommend that nor would Doctor Huffman who was the counseling pastor involved, so I appreciate actually being able to set the record straight,” said Sheriff Schmidt.
“Voces did a little bit of a spin job on what the reality was. Here’s the thing, anytime there has been domestic violence involved, the person who is the aggressor needs to be arrested, must go to jail, that’s law,” Schmidt also said.
“Under no circumstances should anyone involved in a domestic violence walk back into that same situation, unless they have good counseling first, and that’s it’s actually going to work and be safe,” said Schmidt.
