MADISON, Wis. — Several people were injured after a dock collapsed at the University of Wisconsin-Madison's Memorial Union Terrace on Monday, according to our partners at News 3 Now.

Dozens of people fell into the water, prompting a call for a water rescue around 2:35 p.m.

Memorial Union dock collapse on Lake Mendota

It is unclear how many people fell into the water when the pier collapsed, News 3 Now reports. However, Madison Fire Department officials estimated anywhere between 60-80 people were on the pier when it collapsed. Many of those people swam back to shore, UW-Madison said.

One person was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and five others were treated at the scene.

Two divers were sent into the water after the collapse to ensure nobody was underwater. An all-clear has since been given.

There were no lifeguards staffed in the area at the time of the collapse.

UW-Madison says the pier is currently closed and was due to be removed Tuesday for the end of the summer season.

UW–MADISON RESPONDS TO SWIMMING PIER COLLAPSE

Several sections of a UW–Madison swimming pier located alongside Memorial Union collapsed into Lake Mendota around 2:35 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 4. A number of students and other members of the public were on the pier at the time and fell into the water.

The UW–Madison Police Department (UWPD), the Madison Fire Department, the Dane County Sheriff’s Office, Wisconsin Union staff and UW–Madison Dean of Students Christina Olstad responded to the area to provide first aid and assistance.

According to the Madison Fire Department, 60-80 people were estimated to have been on the pier when it collapsed, with many swimming back to shore. One person was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Five others reported injuries and were treated by EMTs and paramedics and released at the scene.

The swimming area was not staffed by lifeguards at the time of the collapse.

The pier is currently closed, and UW–Madison will investigate what occurred. The pier was due to be removed on Tuesday, Sept. 5 for the end of the summer season.
