Seven people were sent to the hospital Thursday night following a three-vehicle wreck involving a school bus. Milwaukee police said the crash stemmed from a high speed chase that ended at 40th and North.
Milwaukee police said officers were chasing a wanted suspect Thursday afternoon after the driver refused to pull over.
Surveillance video from around 3:45 in the afternoon shows a school bus heading east on North Ave. All of a sudden, a car comes plowing into the intersection from 40th Street, grazing the front of the school bus and colliding into the side of a truck.
“I saw the police in a hot pursuit chasing a vehicle, and they had to of been going 110, 130 miles an hour,” said Patrick Smith.
Smith was near North Ave. when the suspect’s car and patrol vehicles came whizzing by.
“It was loud," he said. "It was a loud boom. At the same token, all of a sudden you see all of these cops coming from every direction and all type of things is going on."
The aftermath left the suspect’s blue car completely mangled. Police said the four suspects inside were taken to the hospital. One sustained life-threatening injuries.
The school bus came to a halt about a hundred feet down the street with front end damage. A woman and a 13-year-old boy who were on the bus got hurt.
Police said the person driving the truck was also injured, totaling seven victims taken to the hospital.
“It was scary, very scary,” said Smith. “You just think about the other people’s lives and the kids that could have been chasing a ball.”
Despite Milwaukee Police Department’s promise to pursue fleeing vehicles, Smith doesn’t think the policy will stop many criminals from trying to get away.
“Nowadays they think that’s exciting like it’s a game, but it’s not a game,” he said.
The suspects’ names haven’t been released. Milwaukee police have yet to share why the driver was wanted before the pursuit.
