Serb Hall continues Friday fish fry tradition amidst uncertainty

MILWAUKEE — While Serb Hall's future may be uncertain, they jumped into the Lenten holiday with an all-day Friday fish fry.

Serb Hall was listed for sale recently, but in the meantime, the board of directors president Steve Petrovich said they will continue to offer Friday fish fry through Lent.

"Yeah I think it's going to be bad because this is the place we mainly go for fish," said customer Denise Derosia.

"I hope something works out where they can keep this going. It is a Milwaukee tradition so it would be fantastic if we could keep coming in the future," said Mike Weller.

People have been hooked on Serb Hall's fish fry for decades.

"That's why we came early, because usually if we come the line is like so long," Denise Derosia said as she waited in the drive-thru.

"I have a shortlist of places that I go, and Serb Hall is right at the top," said Mike Weller.

Rose Mitchell stopped by on Friday for the first time and said she came because of the reputation.

"The food is delicious, and it's not that expensive," said Rose.

"Serb Hall is definitely one of the first, if not the first, to have such a large fish fry operation and it just grew over the years," said the board of directors president, Petrovich

With the ongoing pandemic, there is no dine-in option this year. Instead, they are focusing their efforts on drive-thru and walk-up orders and even working with DoorDash to help people get their fish fix.

In a time when there seems to be constant change, a little tradition felt good.

"It’s one thing you can still say, 'it’s somewhat still the same' at least. We’re still forging forward. We’re doing everything we can to put out a good quality product in a traditional fish fry that’s been going on for so long. I know the workers work hard at it. They get some satisfaction knowing people still come and support the hall. It’s a good feeling. It really is," said Petrovich.

Friday fish fry at Serb Hall is available 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. weekly.
