A Waterford man has been charged after he choked and shot a dog to death.

Jay Christopher Hoppe killed his roommate's dog, an English Mastiff named Mack, on Saturday.

According to the criminal complaint, Hoppe was eating dinner with the dog's owner at their home when he started handling the dog aggressively.

The owner of the dog told him to stop, and shortly after saw that he had a bloody lip when he did not stop harassing the dog.

Hoppe said the dog bit him and reacted by going after it and choking it.

The dog's owner attempted to separate Hoppe and the dog by putting it in a truck with her other two dogs, but Hoppe pulled the dog out of the truck and would not let her put him back into the vehicle.

At that point, Hoppe told the woman he would shoot her dog even if she was standing right next to it, so she fled from the home with her other dog.

Hoppe later texted the woman that her dog was "gone."

Deputies located the deceased animal at the end of the driveway.

Hoppe is charged with felony mistreatment of animals, use of a dangerous weapon, domestic abuse assessments and disorderly conduct, domestic abuse assessments.
