MILWAUKEE-- After a review of current department policies, the City of Milwaukee Public Safety and Health Committee recommended approval of three resolutions this week to reform the police department in officer training, tactics, cultural competency, and emotional intelligence.
The measures introduced by Common Council President Cavalier Johnson urge the Fire and Police Commission to adopt de-escalation and restraint policies for the Police Department that align closely with the “Eight Can’t Wait” campaign, guidance to implement emotional intelligence testing and training, and information on implementing 'cultural competency assessments' to the training of recruits.
Joining Common Council President Johnson as co-sponsors on the measures are Alderman José G. Pérez, Alderman Khalif J. Rainey and Alderman Nik Kovac.
“I would like to thank the Public Safety and Health Committee for pushing forward with these three resolutions and recommending them for approval by the full Common Council,” said President Johnson. “The public protests and demonstrations have highlighted the need for police tactics related to de-escalation and restraint to be reformed.”
The three measures are expected to be presented to the full Common Council on July 28 at 9 a.m.
