RACINE — Students itching to text friends during school hours will have to wait, thanks to a new district policy in Racine.

This year, the Racine Unified School District started its ban on cellphones in its middle school classrooms.

Students will be allowed to bring cellphones on campuses but not in the classroom. The decision was made after teachers noticed a number of cellphone-related disciplinary actions being taken in recent years.

“We do ask throughout the day that the cellphones are placed in the locker,” said Principal Zach Jacobsmeier of Gilmore Fine Arts.

Jacobsmeier said it was very important for the district to begin thinking of ways to enforce cellphone use.

“We knew that we had to make some pretty quick decisions on a policy here at the building level,” Jacobsmeier said.

The policy went into effect at the beginning of the 2019-20 school year.
