NEW BERLIN – A portion of Coffee Road in New Berlin remains closed after a report of a sparking wire and explosion Monday evening.
According to New Berlin Police, at approximately 4:20 p.m. Monday, officers were dispatched to the 18300 block of W. Coffee Road to assist the New Berlin Fire Department for a report of a sparking electrical wire in conjunction with an explosion. Upon arriving on scene an officer reported observing a frayed electrical wire and grey smoke coming from the ground beneath the wire.
The New Berlin Police Department then requested the assistance of WE Energies, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Milwaukee County Bomb Squad and the Federal Bureau of Investigation to investigate the cause of this incident.
As police continue their investigation, Coffee Road -- between Calhoun Road and Heide Lane -- is closed, as well as Woelfel Road between Observatory Road and Coffee Road.
Police say residents are still able to access their homes; however, please note that Coffee Road is impassable between Heide Lane and Woelfel Road.
New Berlin Police say they will release more information related to this incident when it’s available.
