Planned Parenthood finds itself in the middle of partisan battle over federal funding. PolitiFact Wisconsin checks out a claim about Planned Parenthood and health care.
Madison Democrat Mark Pocan is no fan of President Trump. He's now raising concerns over federal funding for Planned Parenthood with this tweet: In WI, over 79% of Title X patients rely on Planned Parenthood for their basic health care.
"Title X is a program that's been sponsored in federal budget for decades it provides contraceptive care to individuals," said Greg Borowski with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
In August, PolitiFact Wisconsin says the Trump Administration changed the rules. The new rule prevents health clinics from receiving any federal money if they provide or refer people to abortions.
" So the money itself isn't for abortions but now the extra mandate on there is that it can't go to any group that performs or refers people for abortions," said Borowski. In response to that, Planned Parenthood dropped out of the program of course because it does refer people for abortions."
Planned Parenthood is the largest abortion provider in the country. But Pocan framed his claim around basic health care - meaning things like physicals, flu shots or regular doctor visits.
"Planned Parenthood does do some of that, but this Title X money isn't, isn't the same thing," said Borowski. It doesn't go to that."
PolitiFact Wisconsin rated this claim Mostly True meaning it is accurate but needs clarification.
