School staff gets day of pampering

The saying "give what you can," takes on a different meaning at a north side Milwaukee school. One parent wanted to show her daughter's teachers how much they meant to her, so she used her skills as a makeup artist to put together a special surprise in the form of makeovers.

The teachers at Lloyd Barbee Montessori said between wrapping up the year, standardized testing and taking care of their own families, they have little time to pamper themselves.

"Getting my daughter ready and then hurry up and get to school and get the classroom ready. Sometimes I walk out the door with no makeup," said teacher Carrie O'Connell.

"I don't wear any makeup at all," said teacher Melissa Zheng.

To make matters worse, the students don't miss a chance to let the teachers know when they are looking run down.

"They do comment on it," O'Connell said.

"Kids have no filter at all," parent Krystal Hardy said.

Hardy is a mother of a student at Lloyd Barbee and a makeup artist. She came up with the idea of giving the teachers a little extra tlc. She recruited her friends to pitch in their services for free, too.

"I just wanted to extend my gratitude in a way that I know how and that's by offering beauty services," Hardy said.

A classroom at the school was transformed into a mini salon Friday night. Teachers received treats and had their makeup and nails done.

"I'm just getting my nails done. It's been a long day and now I have my nails done for Mother's Day," principal Katie Loss said. "It's really nice that they want to take care of us and they appreciate all the hard work that everybody does for their students."

"I love it. I feel like a mermaid," Zheng said.
