MILWAUKEE — A 44-year-old Milwaukee man is facing charges after a 7-year-old boy was shot in a car outside a barbecue near 5th and Concordia on May 16.

The injuries required partial amputation of the boy’s left leg.

Simone Downer faces the following charges:

— First-degree reckless injury, use of a dangerous weapon

— First-degree recklessly endangering safety, use of a dangerous weapon — two counts

— Possession of a firearm by a felon

The boy was the 13th child in Milwaukee injured by gun violence this year.

At about 10:30 p.m. May 16, the mother of the boy took her son to Children’s Hospital for treatment. The boy sustained a gunshot wound to his right stomach area, and the bullet continued down his body, ultimately striking an artery in his left leg, according to the criminal complaint.

A witness said she attended a barbecue near 5th and Concordia in celebration of an individual who had recently been released from prison. She said Downer approached with a firearm and began threatening the man who recently had been released from prison.

That man left the party in a Dodge Charger with two children inside, including the 7-year-old shooting victim who was asleep in the back seat. The witness said Downer “emptied his clip” into the vehicle, according to the criminal complaint.
