Milwaukee is in a critical phase right now to close a final offer to land the 2020 Democratic National Convention with a big meeting Wednesday in Washington D-C .

The city had one major financial obstacle to clear but Mayor Tom Barrett said late Wednesday that hurdle has now been cleared.

"I'm anticipating the Democratic National Committee will make its decision within the next month," said Barrett.

Milwaukee's one of three cities in the finals for the 2020 Democratic National Convention. The big city competition includes Miami and Houston.

One financial hurdle facing Milwaukee was coming up with guaranteed dollars, around $10 million from donors, to cover any shortfall in fund raising to host a convention.

Barrett has been working to secure what is known as a line or letter of credit.

"We've taken significant strides forward," said Barrett. "One of the biggest issues was line of credit and we worked hard to resolve that. We've made significant progress and it's no longer an issue."

Barrett says a Milwaukee team is in Washington D.C. this week to hammer out a contract with the DNC.

No decision will be made until all three cities have convention contracts signed.

"They want to see which city is most serious about it and I think we've really demonstrated to them that we are very serious about this," said Mayor Barrett.

The Democratic National Convention is set for the week of July 13-16 in 2020.
