Milwaukee Common Council President Ashanti Hamilton has filed paperwork to run for mayor.

Hamilton submitted a campaign registration statement to the state of Wisconsin to run for mayor in 2020. Hamilton listed Democrat as his political party affiliation, however, municipal elections are nonpartisan.

Alderman Tony Zielinski has indicated he will also run for mayor. Zielinski filed paperwork a year ago and has raised more than $460,000. Zielinski says he welcomes Hamilton to the race.

Mayor Tom Barrett has not indicated if he will run for re-election.

The primary election is on Feb. 18, and the general election is on April 7.
