Milwaukee Ballet offers free boys classes to end stigma

MILWAUKEE — The Milwaukee Ballet is speaking out against the negative stereotypes about boys in ballet after a Good Morning America anchor mocked the idea on a recent broadcast.

“It’s a shame that in 2019 we still have to reiterate that ballet is for everyone," said Michael Pink, Artistic Director of the Milwaukee Ballet.

GMA co-anchor Lara Spencer formally apologized on Monday after mocking Prince George's interest in ballet last week.

She spoke of his interest in dance with sarcasm, ending her report by saying: “Prince William says George absolutely loves ballet. I have news for you, Prince William: We’ll see how long that lasts," Spencer said.

Milwaukee Ballet School & Academy hosts two classes specifically for boys and is offering a week’s free trial for any boys in the community wanting to try it for the first time.

Boys gain flexibility and coordination through ballet classes that transfer equally to artistic and athletic endeavors, organizers said.
