Multiple neighbors, including Lewis Williams, told TMJ4 News they believe a hammer was used in the incident.

Williams also said he heard arguing, and that he saw the young man injured in a driveway before people put him into a car and drove away.

"A child, that's messed up. I really don't know what to say," said Williams.

He said he also overheard the 8-year-old, who was injured, speaking at the scene.

"From what I heard, directly from his mouth was, 'he tried to hit me with the hammer, too,'" said Williams.

MPD are investigating and searching for a known suspect.

Community activist Tracey Dent, near the scene, said he was "in denial" when he heard something so terrible could have happened.

"We have to wrap our arms around this whole family with nothing but love and support," said Dent.

TMJ4 will provide updates as they become available.
