Marinette County Sheriff: DNA technology could solve 40-year cold case

Deputies at the Marinette County Sheriff’s Office hope they’re closer to solving a double homicide from more than 40 years ago.

Authorities revealed Monday a new suspect photo obtained using DNA technology.

Police say they are confident the pictures show what the suspect would look like in 1976 at the age of 25, and what he would look like now.

They believe the man may have killed David Schuldes and Ellen Matheys 42 years ago to the date Monday during a camping trip at McClintock Park.

Deputies say they’ve worked hard for decades on their case, and they hope the new photos can lead them to a breakthrough, even if the man is no longer alive.

"Closure for us, for the victims' families, we certainly would take it right to the tombstone and see about making a match even that way,” said Marinette County Sheriff Jerry Sauve.

Deputies say members of the victims appreciate the efforts from law enforcement, but deputies say the family still has a difficult time talking about the case.

Authorities hope someone will recognize the person in the photo and call the Marinette County Sheriff.
