A man is in police custody after pointing a compound bow at a Racine Police officer Saturday night.

Racine Police responded to the 1900 block of Erie Street for a report of a domestic disturbance just before 10: 30 p.m. Once on the scene, a 43-year-old man pointed a bow at the officer. The officer then fired his weapon at the man in order to stop the threat.

The man was not struck by the firearm. He surrendered and was taken into police custody.

The responding officer is a 5-year veteran of the Racine Police Department. He is on administrative leave while the incident is being investigated.

Neighbors said there were more than a dozen police vehicles on scene.

"We just happened to look out and saw every light and that’s when we put two and two together that, oh my gosh, something happened," Timothea Cooper said.

A neighbor said he called 911 when he heard an altercation between a man and a woman.

The owner of the bar across the street said the neighborhood is usually quiet. He said his customers were calm Saturday night, but they wondered what was going on.

"We knew something major happened," Danny Fazarevich said.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call the Racine Police Department Investigations Unit at 262-635-7756. To remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 262-636-9330.
