Madison restaurants may no longer be allowed to give out plastic straws unless specifically requested to do so by customers.
The new rule is a proposal from Madison Alderman Syed Abbas, according to WISC-TV. Ald. Abbas will present plans for the city ordinance on Aug. 6.
Under the ordinance, restaurants would be able to give out straws to take-out and drive-thru customers, but customers who dine in will be offered only paper or metal straws.
It's all part of the effort to reduce the amount of plastic that ends up in rivers and oceans.
